SCC offers Driver Education classes at physical locations in Lincoln. Lecture also is available online.
Driver Education consists of two components:
Lecture and Drive Lab
20 hours of lecture either in the classroom or online
6 hours of behind-the-wheel training outside of lecture time
SCC Driver Education classes are certified by the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for the Provisional Operator's Permit (POP's) and will waive the written and drive exam for 16 - 17-year-olds. Our program serves students under the age of 18.
We highly recommend student have behind-the-wheel practice with a parent, sponsor or guardian PRIOR to starting the class.

4. Attend Mandatory Orientation
Orientation attendance is required for all driver education classes. Important course information is presented during this Zoom orientation and drive labs are scheduled. Two weeks prior to the required orientation a packet will be sent to the students.
The student or adult representative must attend the Zoom orientation, preferably both.
All orientations will be held from 6-7 p.m. via Zoom. See schedule of classes for required orientation dates. Zoom invites are sent one week prior to the orientation date.

Successful Completion
Successfully completion of the Driver Education course requires students to attend
all lectures in person or online (20 hours total) and drive labs (6 hours total) as
scheduled. Students must successfully pass two written tests with a minimum grade
of 70% and the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles drive test with 15 or fewer errors.
How to Obtain Pop Permit After Successful Completion
After successful completion, SCC will upload the information into the DMV database.
Please allow two weeks for processing. After the DMV has received this information,
students may go online without having to go to the DMV.
Proof of Completion for Insurance
A grade transcript will be mailed to the student’s address provided at registration
within two weeks after successful course completion. Transcript request form (included
in mailed packet) must be completed and submitted to the SCC Continuing Education
office.
Attendance Policy
Attendance is critical to the student’s success. Consideration will be given when
an absence involves a family emergency, serious illness or extenuating circumstance.
The Traffic Safety & Licensing Director determines if an absence is excused. Absences
due to outside activities are not excused (i.e. sports, work schedules, vacations,
etc.).
Cancellation/Refund/Transfer
Students will receive a full refund if the class is dropped one week prior to the
class start date. No refund will be issued if student fails to attend class and/or
drive labs. To drop/transfer to another section, call 402-437-2700.
How do I get registered?
You can register online, by fax or in person.
Do I have to buy the textbook?
Yes.
Do I have to attend orientation?
Yes, or a representative may attend in your place.
Does a parent have to attend the orientation?
Yes, if at all possible. If a parent or guardian isn’t available, another adult or
older sibling may attend with the new driver.
Do I have to attend all lectures and drives?
Yes. This is a requirement by statute.
How will this class help me?
You will receive a Department of Motor Vehicles waiver and are not required to take
any further tests for your license. Many insurance providers offer a discount to those
who successfully complete a Driver's Education course.
Is the testing part of the class?
Testing is a part of driver education and is done for both written and skills assessment.
What happens if I fail either part?
You get two chances to pass the driving part of the class. Subsequent drive re-tests
cost $40 (effective Jan. 1, 2021) each attempt. Should you fail the written test,
you can study and retake it at the Jack J. Huck Continuing Education Center (301 S.
68th St. Place, Lincoln) until you are able to pass the test.
How do I sign up for my drive time?
During orientation, students are divided into groups based at physical locations.
Students choose a drive time in chronological order based on the date you registered
for class.
When is the driving finished?
During the school year, the two-hour drive lab will meet once per week for six consecutive
weeks. During the summer, the two-hour lab will meet every day for one week only Monday
through Saturday. The driving and lecture are always taught concurrently.
How old do I have to be to obtain a Learner Permit?
Minimum age 15.
Can I drive without a learner permit?
No.
Does SCC provide the cars?
Yes.
SCC offers the course lecture online for all sections. Students choosing to take the lecture online versus in the classroom must notify SCC staff at orientation. Students should be registered for the class section at the location where they would prefer to drive.

What are the pros and cons of online lecture?
Pro: Online offers students the flexibility to complete the course around their schedule.
For those students who need more time, it allows them to work at their own pace. Con:
It is not for everyone. If you are not a self-motivated, self-starting student, you
will fall behind and risk not passing the course.
Since I am taking the lecture online, do I have to attend orientation?
Yes, or a representative. You will get vital information about the website, login
information and schedule your drive time.
How do I sign up for my drive time?
During orientation via Zoom, drive labs are selected in chronological order based
on the date you registered for class.
Since I am taking the lecture online, do I have to buy the book?
Yes, you will need to purchase the required book. See the Getting Started section
for more information. You must read the chapters and complete the chapter quizzes.
Does reading the book count for my log-in time?
No. Just as if you were at a physical location, you must be prepared for class and
do the assigned reading prior to lecture.
When do I have to be logged on?
During the school year, you must be logged on four hours each week. This can be any
four hours that fit into your schedule. The hours need not be in a row or on the weekends.
During the summer, you must be logged on two hours each day, again, not necessarily
in a row or on the weekend. Log on during hours that fit into your schedule.
How many hours per day/week are required for the online lecture?
- During the school year, you are required to be online four hours per week for five consecutive weeks.
- During the summer, you are required to be online 20 hours for the one week or required to be online 10 hours per week for two consecutive weeks.
Is the instructor online when I’m online?
Your instructor will have virtual office hours that are published on the course calendar.
The instructor is online at various times throughout the course. Additionally, your
instructor is available by phone and email.
Where do I do my driving?
Classes are offered at physical locations in Lincoln. You register for the location
you want to drive from, even though you are taking the lecture online. This class
is offered at several public high schools and SCC's Lincoln Campus (8800 O St.).

LPS Student Drivers Education Fund
The Lincoln Public School Foundation is providing limited financial assistance to qualifying LPS students for the SCC Driver Education Course. For qualifying students this fund provides financial support for tuition ($379.00) and textbook ($46.76). Complete the application if you are in need of financial assistance for the Southeast Community College’s Driver Education course.
Eligibility Requirements
Student must be:
- Receiving Free/Reduced Lunch
- At least 15 years old and attending a Lincoln Public School
What is Covered?
Qualifying students may receive full tuition and textbook.
Steps to apply:
- Complete the application form.
- Submit a copy of your Free/Reduced Lunch letter.
- Submit a thank you letter describing how the program will be beneficial to your future.
- Complete Southeast Community College Non-Credit Registration Form. View the available schedule to get the section information to include on the registration form.
