What is an International Student?

An international student is a prospective student requesting to receive an I-20 from Southeast Community College to study in the United States on a F-1 visa.  

Initial: Students currently living outside the United States coming to Southeast Community College to study.  

Transfer: Students who are already studying at a college or university in the United States and would like to transfer their I-20 to Southeast Community College.

International Student FAQ

 

Are there any programs international students cannot apply to?

Yes, international students cannot enroll in certificate programs that take one semester to complete.
Examples include Nursing Assistant, Dietary Manager, Global Studies, and Office Professional.

Can I apply for financial aid or scholarships?

No, Southeast Community College does not provide financial aid for international students. International students must demonstrate financial independence to enroll. The only exception is if an international student participates in sports and the coach offers a scholarship.

When should I contact a Designated School Official (DSO)?

You should email internationaladmissions@southeast.edu if you need to: 

  • Change your program.
  • Request a program extension.
  • Update your contact information.
  • Report a change of address.
  • Take a break from school.
  • Travel outside of the United States.
  • Transfer to a new school.

Can International Students study Health Programs at SCC?

If you are interested in completing one of the following programs: Dental Assisting, Medical Laboratory Technology, Nursing, Paramedic, Physical Therapist Assistant, Radiologic Technology, Respiratory Technology, and Surgical Technology) at SCC, you must complete the required prerequisite courses. To complete the required prerequisite courses for the above programs, students must first apply to the Health Sciences program. The Health Sciences program allows international students to be accepted to SCC, issued an I-20 and begin the required prerequire courses needed for their desired Health program. 

Can I study part-time?

No, if you have an I-20 and live in Nebraska, you must be enrolled full-time.

Can I work while attending Southeast Community College?

Yes, international students can work up to 20 hours per week on campus. Jobs are available in the library, coffee shop, childcare center, and other campus offices.

Can I take online classes?

If you live outside the United States, you may take classes online. However, if you have an I-20 and live in Nebraska, you must enroll in at least 9 credits in person, with the remaining credits taken online.
