Culinary fundraiser helps pay for trip to France for SCC students
A two-day bakery fundraiser to help pay for expenses for a trip to France in May turned into a one-day fundraiser because items sold out so fast. Colorful cupcakes, cookies, cakes, chocolate-covered strawberries, macarons, and more sold out fast the day before Valentine’s Day.
“Thank you to everyone who stopped by the bake sale,” said Vicki Rethmeier, Culinary/Hospitality Program Co-Chair. “Everything sold out today. We appreciate the support!”
Sixteen students and two faculty members will embark on a nine-day trip to France May 15-23, 2023. The “Taste of France” trip will focus on French cuisine and includes tours of restaurants, vineyards and even a cooking class with a famous chef. The tour includes Paris, Loire Valley, Normandy and more historic locations. Culinary instructors Kim Williams-Lamb and Amber Pankonin will take part in the trip with the students.
“Building community with our students is really important,” said Pankonin. “This is a way to feel more connection with the program and with each other.”
The students spent Feb. 10 and 11 baking the items so they would be available in time for Valentine’s Day. $1200 was raised from the event. In addition, there will be a five-course banquet fundraiser on March 23 to raise additional funds for the trip. Tickets are not yet available for that event.
