Meet the Graduate: Kaylin Smith

Kaylin Smith loves helping people but she didn't know what career would be best for her. As a student at Sterling High School she enrolled in Southeast Community College’s SENCAP program which played a pivotal role towards pursuing a career in the health science field.

“Despite knowing I always wanted to help people, I had a hard time truly narrowing down what degree I wanted to pursue,” Smith said. “This changed once I took classes through the SENCAP program in high school. I was able to explore a wide range of careers in healthcare and figure out what was the right fit for me.”

Smith was able to take the Clifton Strengths Assessment through Gallup while in SENCAP which showed how her natural strengths aligned with the health field. Job shadowing and field trips to area healthcare facilities reinforced her desire to pursue a career in the field. Once she stepped foot on the Beatrice Campus as an SCC student, she took advantage of every opportunity she could to be a well-rounded person for her next venture after she graduates.

“My involvement as a Resident Assistant and member of the Beatrice Student Senate has given me valuable experiences I can take with me in my career,” she explained. “As an RA, I’ve learned leadership and communication skills that will help me thrive in my career. My time in the Student Senate enhanced my teamwork and organization skills. The combination of all these experiences at SCC has provided me with knowledge and skills I will need to succeed.”

She plans to continue her education at the University of Nebraska at Kearney in the Pre-Medical Lab Sciences program. Smith hopes to become a Medical Laboratory Scientist after she graduates. Because of her experience at SCC, she knows she is ready to take on the world.

“I remember stepping onto college as a shy, anxious student who solely focused on getting good grades,” Smith said. “However, SCC has allowed me to gain new experiences and meet new people while challenging myself. This has helped me blossom into a more confident person who is up to embracing new opportunities and challenges. I have SCC to thank for helping me grow as a person while still being true to myself.”
