Mark Your Calendar: SCC's All-College Open House Nov. 1
The All-College Open House, an opportunity for alumni, friends, prospective students and the general public to get a glimpse of what's going on at Southeast Community College, will take place Nov. 1.
The College will hold its traditional Open House at each of the three campuses from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at the Beatrice, Lincoln and Milford campuses.
Until the 2008-2009 academic year, the College held three events on three separate dates, one in the fall and two in the spring. That practice was changed last year.
In order to make the event more attractive to prospective students, Open House was moved to a fall date, generally the busiest time for high school seniors and juniors to investigate colleges. Although Nov. 1 is nearly two months later than last year's event, organizers decided it was the right time for a variety of reasons.
"Holding Open House on this date certainly will give our recruiters more time to promote it during their high school visits," said Robin Moore, dean of student services/enrollment. "All of our programs do such a great job of showcasing themselves that we really want to get as many prospects there as we can."
SCC alumni, of course, are another major audience that frequents Open House. Instructors comment each year about how many former SCC students came to visit during Open House.
"This is one group that we don't want to forget about," said Bill Vocasek, chair of the Auto Collision Repair Technology program in Milford. "It's important that we make the day alumni friendly."
Open House is a time where every program is showcased. Students and their parents spend time viewing displays and talking to faculty representing programs in which they are interested. It's a great day for all prospective students and their families, including those who are undecided about what they want to study.
Later in the school year, prospective students may choose to register for and attend a day in which they can shadow individual programs to get more specific information that will help them decide which program is right for them.
Other SCC departments also are showcased at Open House, including the College's Entrepreneurship Center, Continuing Education Division, as well as services such as financial aid, advising, TRIO, and ABE/ESL.
Prospective students can register for scholarships and door prizes, tour the campus and programs and see current SCC students engaged in hands-on demonstrations. A live two-hour radio remote also will take place at each campus location. Campuses are located at 4771 W. Scott Road in Beatrice, 8800 O St. in Lincoln, and 600 State St. in Milford.
